It has been a frustrating summer for Newcastle and Tottenham as far as the transfer market has been concerned but they can light up the new Premier League season with a thrilling encounter on Sky Sports this Sunday…
- Newcastle were the top scorers in the Championship with 85 goals last season
- Newcastle’s Championship matches witnessed 125 goals in total during 2016/17 (2.7 goals per game on average)
- Tottenham were the Premier League’s top scorers with 86 goals last term
|Sunday 13th August – 1.30pm||Odds||Won/Lost||Bet|
|Newcastle v Tottenham|
| Over 2.5 goals
|@ 5 / 6||
Historically this is a match that provides entertainment as the past six Newcastle v Tottenham fixtures have produced 24 goals in total and the Magpies actually thrashed Spurs 5-1 when they last met at St James’ Park in May 2016.
Over 2.5 goals looks like a stand-out bet at 5/6 with Betfred this weekend as the Championship’s top scorers from last season meet the Premier League’s top goalscorers.
Rafa Benitez did a wonderful job to get Newcastle promoted as champions at the first time of asking in the Championship but this is a big step up in class and the North East outfit are 4/1 underdogs for victory.
Tottenham might be vulnerable though as the unsettled Danny Rose is missing through injury, as are Erik Lamela and Kieran Trippier, which leaves Mauricio Pochettino having to shift his defence around ahead of a game for which they are 8/13 favourites.
Bank On Goals
Spurs only managed to win one away game against top-ten opposition en route to finishing runners up in the Premier League last season but they won eight of ten at the bottom-half teams. When considering a bet on Sunday’s match, much will depend on how you rate Newcastle – are they top-half material or are they in for a season of struggle?
Tottenham did score 29 goals against bottom-half sides away from home and the Spurs win combined with over 2.5 goals can be backed at 6/4 (Paddy Power), while a Spurs win and both teams to score is available at 12/5 (bet 365).
There appears to be a guarantee of goals this weekend and Harry Kane is 3/1 favourite to be first goalscorer (Ladbrokes) having notched 20 goals in his past 15 games against newly promoted teams.
