Police release CCTV image in Black Country money laundering probe

Police have released an image of a man they wish to trace in connection with a money laundering investigation.

A man was captured on CCTV using dye-stained banknotes at several bookmakers in the Black Country on June 12.

Dye-stained notes are regular Bank of England notes which have been stained blue, red or purple as an anti-theft measure if they are stolen.

Police believe the man, who was spotted using the stained cash at bookies in Oldbury, Rowley Regis and Blackheath, may have been attempting to gamble the money in a bid to win ‘clean’ notes in return.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “Typically notes stolen during cash-in-transit robberies are damaged this way as dye explodes when the cash box is forced open without the correct pin code.

“Offenders are known to use a variety of methods to try to clean the money and dodge the anti-theft system – including gambling the notes at bookies in an attempt to obtain ‘clean’ money in winnings.

“The man pictured is suspected of doing just that, and anyone who is able to identify him is asked to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Please quote crime number 20SW/150165E/17.”
